Title: Sufficiently Advanced Magic Pdf Arcane Ascension, Book 1
Five years ago Corin Cadence's brother entered the Serpent Spire - a colossal tower with ever-shifting rooms, traps, and monsters. Those who survive the spire's trials return home with an attunement: a mark granting the bearer magical powers. According to legend, those few who reach the top of the tower will be granted a boon by the spire's goddess.
He never returned.
Now it's Corin's turn. He's headed to the top floor, on a mission to meet the goddess.
If he can survive the trials, Corin will earn an attunement, but that won't be sufficient to survive the dangers on the upper levels. For that he's going to need training, allies, and a lot of ingenuity.
The journey won't be easy, but Corin won't stop until he gets his brother back.
Too Much of Everything on to Feel Connected to Anything A test opens this complicated and lengthy young adult fantasy. Most of the test is fighting various monsters and solving puzzles in a mysterious tower. The similarity to role playing games is intentional. There are two main goals to going into the tower: survival and gaining an attunement. Survival is not guaranteed. An attunement is the combination of an affinity and an ability in connection with a particular sort of magic. Corin Cadence is our young male hero. His trip into the tower also has the goal of finding out what happened to his older brother who entered the tower and never returned. Right from the beginning, Corin’s trip in the tower goes astray as unexpected and unusual events begin to happen. All of this is explained at length in the story and in long appendix materials at the end of the book. The system of magic is complex and that complexity detracts from its attractiveness and the story. Most of the book is set in the boarding school that Corin and other young people with attunements enter after exiting the tower. The cast of characters is lengthy as well with professors, students, family members, and mysterious entities. The plot involves some coming of age themes, magical training, treachery, loyalty, war, and political intrigue. For me, it all got a bit muddled and the excessive complications interfered with my connection to the story and the characters. The author was committed to creating the fantasy world, a religious tangle of multiple gods with a ruling Goddess, fantasy weapons, and his system of magic in great detail. I felt like I was slogging through the book at times. There is a great deal of fighting and violence in the book, but it is mostly is a fantasy type of fighting and lacks gruesome details. The swearing is made up words. There are hints of some mild and innocent romance/flirtation that includes the possibility of a same sex relationship. The book is the first in a series and this volume ends with many unresolved issues. There are other young adult fantasy series that I have found to more engaging, including, for example, the Rebel of the Sands trilogy by Alwyn Hamilton, The Queen’s Thief Series by Megan Whalen Turner, The Chronicles of Kazam series by Jasper Fforde, the Shifting Tides series by James Maxwell, not to mention the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula LeGuin or Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.
