About the Author

Father Thomas Keating is known throughout the world as an exponent, teacher, and writer on contemplative prayer. A Cistercian (Trappist) monk of St. Benedict’s Monastery, Snowmass, Colorado, he is a founder of the Centering Prayer Movement and of Contemplative Outreach. He is the author of numerous books, particularly of the trilogy Open Mind, Open Heart; Invitation to Love; and The Mystery of Christ. Among his most recent books is The Daily Reader for Contemplative Living, compiled by S. Stephanie Iachetta.

I have a checkered spiritual past. Like many people of my generation, I have always felt that modern life was going in the wrong direction, and that the traditional answers we were getting from the government and institutionalized religion just weren’t quenching the spiritual drought in the contemporary world. So I went east, to Buddhism, the Sufis, Hinduism, looking for something that might help me fill the void I felt. Then I stumbled upon the Centering Prayer movement. Little did I know that the Christian tradition that I grew up in, would hold the secret to what I was looking for.
Centering Prayer is based squarely in the Christian tradition. It is based on forms of prayer that have roots in the earliest Christian monesteries of the 4th century. There are even tantalizing glimpses of it in the writings of St. Paul and even the Gospels, though not spelled out in so many words (which is probably what gives literalists conniptions.) It existed in the Benedictine monasteries of medieval Europe, in the Cloud of Unknowing, the 14th century manual of prayer, and in the writings of St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila. It is not, I repeat, NOT a "new age" spirituality, unless one thinks that all of Christian Spirituality is new age (and the case could be made that it is.) Centering Prayer is a simple method of prayer that is designed to help us consent to the presence and action of God in our lives. Through quite simple guildelines and a few adjustments of attitudes, Centering Prayer helps us to let go of our own ego and expectations and just "wait upon the Lord". For me, it has been key to reawakening my Christian faith.
Having been a practicing Buddhist for many years, I can say that readers who equate Centering Prayer with Buddhist practice are mistaken.

First off, fair warning to parents and people who are sensitive to partial nudity – there is some in this volume, but it’s not for the context of people getting it on. Have you ever heard of the term "food porn" before (really awesome pictures of food where you just want to stop what you’re doing and eat something?) This book has the follow up to food porn known as "foodgasm"…the sometimes questionable looking images are based on completely over the top eating reactions where a character may be reduced down to their skivvies. No human melons or sausages are flashed, but as a parent, I wanted to give full disclosure. That said, as the manga goes on into further chapters, the gratuitous fan service scenes do die down – again, keep in mind, panty flashes is not the focus of this manga.

That said, Shokugeki no Soma is total Shonen Manga (targeted to young boys) – it’s a story about Yukihira S’ma, whose dream is to become a full-time chef in his father’s restaurant and surpass his father’s culinary skills. When S’ma graduates middle school, his father, Yukihira J’ichir’ , gets a new job in America and abruptedly closes his restaurant. In the meantime, J’ichir’ sends S’ma to an elite culinary school where only 10% of the students manage to graduate. The first five chapters are included in this volume, along with the original one shot used to promote the series.

The art done by Shun Saeki is absolutely stunning. The illustrations are highly detailed, well laid out, and the food images totally rival anything you could see on Food Network. You will want to stop and eat something while reading this manga. The story by Yuto Tsukuda is equally gripping. It can be slightly predictable, but no less really entertaining to read.

This short, direct-to-the-point book isn’t just for women! I like how she distinguishes filling our days with work and doing our best work. She wants to see us progress on our highest and best callings of life – work that makes the greatest impact on lives (ours and others). “Busy work is the thief of our best work,” she writes. Her goal for us is not to get more things done but to get the right things done.

She helps us understand procrastination and our motivation behind it. Once we’ve done that we can identify motivators to get us moving in the right direction. We look at the cost of decisions, the cost of procrastinating, stress (from procrastinating), fear, overload, perfectionism, decision making, will-power, time management, setting goals, identifying projects vs. tasks, prioritizing, and getting an accountability partner.

I really appreciate her comments on planning time for renewal, like Bible reading and other activities that energize us. She even wants us to take time to dream.

This book is not going to tell you how to create the best to-do list. It will help you understand how you can accomplish the most important tasks before you, slaying that procrastination dragon. The choice is still yours. Whitwer gives you the tools for getting the best things done. It’s still up to each one of us to follow through.

It amazes me to think that the simplest life lessons are not shared or even passed down to other generations. Everyone needs to have these techniques in order to perform better and with a lot of less stress and anxiety even guilt. Taming the To-Do List: How to Choose Your Best Work Every Day by Glynnis Whitwer battles the procrastination beast that has plagued so many with no end in sight. It scares me to the core that I tend to worry over this because it should be among one of the most important talks that any one person has with younger folks. It would benefit them in the long run even if at the moment all they want to do is roll those eyes to the heavens. Once it is planted the seed will grow and create the backdrop to success. A little corny but it needs to be said and shared in order to work. I think the best part of Whitwer’s words is that she shares her battle and gives the best and only one workable solution in order to end this struggle. Although the struggle is real it can be dealt with and remedied. It would be nice to have this kind of technique down early but it is never to late to start at any point in ones life. Better late than never. I received a copy for this review from Revell Books and all opinions are my own.
