"Talking to Strangers is a must-read...I love this book... Reading it will actually change not just how you see strangers, but how you look at yourself, the news--the world...Reading this book changed me."―Oprah Winfrey, O, The Oprah Magazine"Powerful advice on truly getting to know others...Gladwell brilliantly argues that we should stop assuming, realize no one's transparent and understand that behavior is tied to unseen circumstances."―People, Book of the Week"Gladwell has again delivered a compelling, conversation-starting read...At a time when the world feels intractably polarized, a book examining the varying ways we misinterpret or fail to communicate with one another could not feel more necessary...With a mix of reporting, research and a deft narrative hand, Gladwell illuminates these examples with the page-turning urgency of a paperback thriller."―Chris Barton, Los Angeles Times"Mr. Gladwell's towering success rests on the moment when the skeptic starts to think that maybe we're wrong about everything and maybe, just maybe, this Gladwell guy is onto something...Talking to Strangers is weightier than his previous titles."―Amy Chozick, New York Times"Gladwell's case studies are thrilling...Chock-full of gripping anecdotes from the recent and forgotten past. He uses these riveting stories to offer up bite-size observations about how we engage with strangers."―Maggie Taft, Booklist"Another Gladwell tour de force...intellectually stimulating...Readers expecting another everything-you-think-you-know-is-wrong page-turner will not be disappointed."―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Both fascinating and topical...A thoughtful treatise...Gladwell writes in his signature colorful, fluid, and accessible prose."―Publishers Weekly"Gladwell interviews brilliant people, generates powerful insights, writes like an angel, and has earned a massive and admiring audience. Gladwell is a big-picture thinker who helps us make sense of the human condition."―Bob Brisco, WebMD Magazine"As always, with his narrative gift and eye for the telling detail, Gladwell peppers his work with unforgettable facts... He has immense gifts--a probing, original, questioning mind, an ability to dig up information others haven't considered and tie it to a broader point. He has a narrative skill nonpareil."―Stephen Galloway, Hollywood Reporter"Engaging...Mr. Gladwell [presents] a mountain of quirky anecdotes and interesting research about our blunders with strangers, and why we make them...It's fascinating to peek at these incidents through Mr. Gladwell's psychological lens."―Leigh Anne Focareta, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Revisionist History and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Outliers, offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers--and why they often go wrong.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true?

Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken straight from the news. He revisits the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at Penn State University, and the death of Sandra Bland---throwing our understanding of these and other stories into doubt. Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world. In his first book since his #1 bestseller, David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell has written a gripping guidebook for troubled times.

Sadly, Gladwell places his foot in his mouth... Wow, does this book ever suffer from a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease!I almost didn’t make it past the introduction. In my pre-publication copy, Gladwell writes, “The Sandra Bland case came in the middle of a strange interlude in American public life” and then goes on to discuss a series of cases of police violence against black people that happened around 2014.“Strange interlude.” Really? That phrasing suggests that this treatment was some sort of aberration in American history and that the violence only happened during the few years he references. Did Gladwell really mean to ignore America’s long history of this problem?I don’t think so? I think he may have meant that the attention paid to police violence was unusual, but dude, choose your words much more carefully.Later on, there are some good points made about how and why we tend to misunderstand each other. But, again, I almost put the book down, this time while reading the chapter on the Brock Turner sexual assault case. Without going into detail, that chapter could only have been written by someone who's buried his head in the sand over the past five years or so.It’s tough to ignore the problematic elements of Talking to Strangers. I could definitely see the discussion of the causes of sexual assault offending some readers to the point that they abandon the book altogether. I’ve definitely enjoyed other books by the author a lot more than this one. Two stars. Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for giving me a DRC of this book.Doesn't deliver. As one reviewer mentioned, the Interlude and the section on Brock Turner are absolutely cringeworthy for a host of reasons. I too almost stopped reading before the I got to the first chapter, and now I'm sort of disappointed that I read all the way to the end. Fascinating facts are revealed in typical Gladwell fashion which keeps the pace moving. But he comes terribly short on providing any sort of value for actually talking to strangers. Gladwell basically says, "Hey! We suck at talking to strangers. Here's some interesting situations that prove my point. But I have no ideas on how to be better at talking to strangers."Better on Audible than on Kindle or Hardcover. It's odd to see some of the reviews. I waited until I actually finished the book before adding some thoughts here.If you are new to Gladwell, you will greatly enjoy "Talking to Strangers"... as it is a must read for anybody who needs to make snap judgements about people's character and behavior.Of course, if you are a fan of Gladwell, you will of course enjoy it, especially if you hear it on Audible. Gladwell produces the Audible version as if it was an extended episode of his "Revisionist History" Podcast. The music and all the extra interviews from actual people, really brings the book to life.Heck... if you don't like it, return it... though if you start, you will probably keep it.Enjoy!

Title: Three Women Pdf
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Extraordinary…A nonfiction literary masterpiece…I can’t remember the last time a book affected me as profoundly as Three Women.” —Elizabeth Gilbert

“The hottest book of the summer…Groundbreaking…Breathtaking…Staggeringly intimate.” —Entertainment Weekly

“The most in-depth look at the female sex drive that’s been published in decades.” —New York

Three Women will be whispered about around pools from coast to coast.” —Town & Country

Desire as we’ve never seen it before: a riveting true story about the sex lives of three real American women, based on nearly a decade of reporting.

It thrills us and torments us. It controls our thoughts, destroys our lives, and it’s all we live for. Yet we almost never speak of it. And as a buried force in our lives, desire remains largely unexplored—until now. Over the past eight years, journalist Lisa Taddeo has driven across the country six times to embed herself with ordinary women from different regions and backgrounds. The result, Three Women, is the deepest nonfiction portrait of desire ever written and one of the most anticipated books of the year.

We begin in suburban Indiana with Lina, a homemaker and mother of two whose marriage, after a decade, has lost its passion. She passes her days cooking and cleaning for a man who refuses to kiss her on the mouth, protesting that “the sensation offends” him. To Lina’s horror, even her marriage counselor says her husband’s position is valid. Starved for affection, Lina battles daily panic attacks. When she reconnects with an old flame through social media, she embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming.

In North Dakota we meet Maggie, a seventeen-year-old high school student who finds a confidant in her handsome, married English teacher. By Maggie’s account, supportive nightly texts and phone calls evolve into a clandestine physical relationship, with plans to skip school on her eighteenth birthday and make love all day; instead, he breaks up with her on the morning he turns thirty. A few years later, Maggie has no degree, no career, and no dreams to live for. When she learns that this man has been named North Dakota’s Teacher of the Year, she steps forward with her story—and is met with disbelief by former schoolmates and the jury that hears her case. The trial will turn their quiet community upside down.

Finally, in an exclusive enclave of the Northeast, we meet Sloane—a gorgeous, successful, and refined restaurant owner—who is happily married to a man who likes to watch her have sex with other men and women. He picks out partners for her alone or for a threesome, and she ensures that everyone’s needs are satisfied. For years, Sloane has been asking herself where her husband’s desire ends and hers begins. One day, they invite a new man into their bed—but he brings a secret with him that will finally force Sloane to confront the uneven power dynamics that fuel their lifestyle.

Based on years of immersive reporting, and told with astonishing frankness and immediacy, Three Women is a groundbreaking portrait of erotic longing in today’s America, exposing the fragility, complexity, and inequality of female desire with unprecedented depth and emotional power. It is both a feat of journalism and a triumph of storytelling, brimming with nuance and empathy, that introduces us to three unforgettable women—and one remarkable writer—whose experiences remind us that we are not alone.

Remarkable “Women shouldn’t judge one another’s lives, if we haven’t been through one another’s fires.”The three women in the book all have different stories but are similar in the sense that they are all feeling unfulfilled with their current situations.I got very emotionally attached to all of these women, I was more invested in two of the three but every single story was compelling and upsetting at the same time. Each chapter shocked me a little more and I found myself frustrated with the feeling that the happiness of these women’s lives was so dependent on the actions of the men around them.It was very easy to get invested in the stories and the writing does not make you feel like you are reading a work of non-fiction. I will say that if you don’t like sexual content in your books that you may want to pass on this one. Otherwise I completely recommend this book.More reviews on Instagram @unshelvededitionYuck. Depressing. I pre-ordered this and paid full price, based on rave reviews from magazines & TV. I expected a sexy, empowering group of stories. I'm sorely disappointed, and struggling to finish the book. Ms. Taddeo is a great writer, and these women deserve to be heard. But PLEASE tell me that the kind of subservient-to-men, self-hating, self-disrespecting, pick-me-no-matter-what thinking that precludes these sorts of experiences are not the norm anymore! If so, we grown women apparently need a swift kick in the behind to wake up and stop giving everyone else power over our lives and loves. There is so much wisdom available to us via modern technology, that we no longer have to live sequestered with whatever familial, religious, cultural or societal boxes have been drawn around us. We have the awesome ability to choose how we engage with what badly behaving lovers do, even those who claim to love us. We can choose to love ourselves better than anyone else does, thereby leading by example and showing people what we won't tolerate, and what we deserve. And this is how we'll teach children to treat themselves and others with true love and respect. They need to see us leading by example. This book is not sexy at all. It's sad. Anyone experiencing anything like these stories needs compassion and help recovering.A dazzlingly virtuosic guided tour of women's desire circa 2019 told via unforgettable characters First off, I have no idea how Lisa Taddeo wrote this book. It is mystery, thriller, art novel, revelation, and stealthy manifesto all rolled into one. Her endnotes say it took her ten years to write it, and I can see why. From the 5000 or so letters women have sent me over the years seeking love advice, I thought I'd have some initiation into the issues of female desire. But this book seems to be something else entirely. The molecular-level excursion into the minds of the three women, their sometimes minute-by-minute thoughts, the earth-cleaving intensity of their deprivation and desire, the cataclysms of momentary fulfillment (followed by "Will it ever happen again?"), the perpetual background noise of inadequacy -- all revelatory. Is this sample representative of all women? Is this really what goes on inside their minds and bodies? The book's called "Three Women", not "All Women", and the poetry and heart of Taddeo's writing have the ring of truth to it, so I'll go with that for now.The three central figures cover a broad range of Americana: an upper-class East Coast restaurateur whose husband likes to watch her with other men; a middle-class unhappily-married Midwestern mother of two reconnecting with her high school flame; and a working-class girl who got involved with her married teacher when she was underage. Taddeo depicts four-dimensional portraits of Maggie, Sloane and Lina, moving through time in the full range of emotional space. These portraits are so convincing that it felt at times that I resided inside the protagonists' heads. This is novelistic writing at its best, except that none of it is fiction. The novelistic treatment can also get a bit heavy-handed. And it's hard for me to believe that it's all pain, bad decisions and anguish out there, punctuated by the occasional furtive orgasm from an illicit source. Fine, love and sex are complicated and all, but surely there's *someone* having some simple fun somewhere? And there's a fourth player in the book: technology. I couldn't help but notice how much of the narrative was shaped by text messages deleted or spied on, cellphones running out of charge, sext and video spicing things up or bringing homes down. Apparently there be dragons out there, and Taddeo's book is artful, compassionate, and convincing cartography of some terra incognita. Read it for a deeper understanding of humans, or just for the thrill of it. -- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., Happiness Engineer and author of The Tao of Dating: The Smart Woman's Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible, the highest-rated dating book on Amazon, and Should I Go to Medical School?: An Irreverent Guide to the Pros and Cons of a Career in Medicine

The Wisdom of the Enneagram Download

ISBN: 0553378201
Title: The Wisdom of the Enneagram Pdf The Complete Guide to Psychological and Spiritual Growth for the Nine Personality Types

Recommended by two highly credible authorities, consciousness explorer Ken Wilber and spiritual-growth guru Harville Hendrix, this compendium of Enneagram information was assembled by the cofounders of the Enneagram Institute as an introduction to the subject. Designed with a plenitude of charts, boxes, and quotes (by noted illuminaries such as A.H. Almaas, Maya Angelou, and G.I. Gurjieff), this exceptionally easy-to-use, manual-size paperback teaches the reader how to figure out which of the nine types she is, identifies red flags to self-illusion, and provides practical suggestions for spiritual growth. Advice on how to observe your type's fixations and let go of the need to act out automatic and dysfunctional behavioral responses are down-to-earth and attainable. A distinctly accessible approach to cultivating daily happiness through understanding the complexity of fixations that weave together human personality types. --Randall Cohan "The Wisdom of the Enneagram is a very important book. By combining the horizontal types of the Enneagram with a system of vertical levels of awareness, Riso and Hudson have produced one of the first truly integrated models of the human psyche. In addition to the importance of this pioneering work itself, it goes to point up the utter inadequacy of anything less than a full-spectrum model of human growth and development. Highly recommended."--Ken Wilber, author of The Marriage of Sense and Soul"I highly recommend this book, not only to anyone on the path of personal transformation, but to anyone who wants to understand the complex inner world of others, whether a spouse, family member co-worker or friend. The questionnaires were fun and illuminating. I received some very helpful information about myself, felt challenged to grow and experienced a deepening of compassion. Perhaps the most profound contribution of The Wisdom of the Enneagram is reflected in the word "Wisdom." The authors clearly communicate the complexity of human nature, the spiritual yearning resonant in all of us, and the ascending levels of our possibility. But they do not leave us there. They offer a clear path for personal and spiritual evolution."--Harville Hendrix, Ph.D., author of Getting the Love You Want"Don Riso and Russ Hudson thoughtfully engage the richness and depth of the Enneagram, and conjure with its power as a tool of transformation. The Wisdom of the Enneagram is filled with its own wisdom and depth. You'll find yourself returning to it over and over again and discovering new treasures."--Tony Schwartz, author of What Really Matters"The Wisdom of the Enneagram is not only a clear and comprehensive description and discussion of this ancient personality typology, but also a major and original contribution to its use and further development. Don Riso and Russ Hudson have designed simple practical guidelines and tests that make it possible to determine one's own personality type and use this knowledge for healing and psychospiritual transformation."--Stanislav Grof, M.D., author of The Adventure of Self-Discovery

The first definitive guide to using the wisdom of the enneagram for spiritual and psychological growth

The ancient symbol of the Enneagram has become one of today's most popular systems for self-understanding, based on nine distinct personality types. Now, two of the world's foremost Enneagram authorities introduce a powerful new way to use the Enneagram as a tool for personal transformation and development. Whatever your spiritual background, the Enneagram shows how you can overcome your inner barriers, realize your unique gifts and strengths, and discover your deepest direction in life.

The Wisdom of the Enneagram includes:

Two highly accurate questionnaires for determining your type
Vivid individual profiles focused on maximizing each type's potential and minimizing predictable pitfalls
Spiritual Jump Starts, Wake-Up Calls, and Red Flags for each type
Dozens of individualized exercises and practical strategies for letting go of troublesome habits, improving relationships, and increasing inner freedom
Revealing insights into the deepest motivations, fears, and desires of each type

Highly accessible, yet filled with sophisticated concepts and techniques found nowhere else, The Wisdom of the Enneagram is a strikingly new fusion of psychology and spirituality. It offers an exciting vision of human possibility and a clear map of the nine paths to our highest self-expression.

This book changed my life. The enneagram has been along for a very long time and I am surprised I haven't heard about it until now. I have read so many self help books thru out my life and I never was told about this. I think it would have saved me years of searching for the right book if I had found it sooner. Once I found out which personality I was my life started to make so much sense and I was relieved to find out that my childhood was how I developed into this personality and that I could change my life if I wanted. The knowledge this book gave me about myself was spot on and it taught me how to think differently to get out of the old patterns I had developed and is making me a better person that I wanted to be. I did it for myself nobody else and I am happy I read this and I going to keep incorporating thisinto my life as it does take awhile to change old patterns but is can be done and you will be happier when you do. It is definitely a must read if you want to change or understand yourself better because change only comes with knowledge.Personality: from disorders to enlightenment Now I finally, really understand the Enneagram. The missing piece for me was that the instinct (default emotion) for care-givers, go-getters, and individualists is shame rather than sadness. I love that it gives a scale for how each type evolves. These personality types (identified in the 1950s) are now backed by neuroscience. What we value (control, connection, certainty) determines where your attention is directed. The brain likes to specialize in a "de-fault" emotion: anger (control), shame (connection), and fear (certainty). Anyone who wants to understand personality from disorders to enlightenment should read this book or learn about the Enneagram!Fully featured introduction into The Enneagram of Personality Very useful - if used. I was reading a Richard Rohr's "Falling Upward" when he referenced the use of an Enneagram. I was intrigued. Looked it up, bought the book, typed my personality using the Enneagram method then, went the extra, and confirmed type by filling the type assessment by filling out a 140 question assessment online at a recommended website. Very good insight into personality type(s).From Wikipedia - "The Enneagram of Personality has been widely promoted in both business management and spiritual contexts through seminars, conferences, books, magazines, and DVDs.In business contexts it is generally used as a typology to gain insights into workplace dynamics; in spirituality, it is more commonly presented as a path to higher states of being, essence, and enlightenment. It has been described as a method for self-understanding and self-development."

How to Have Impossible Conversations Download

ISBN: B07X7KF3KX
Title: How to Have Impossible Conversations Pdf A Very Practical Guide

"This is a self-help book on how to argue effectively, conciliate, and gently persuade. The authors admit to getting it wrong in their own past conversations. One by one, I recognize the same mistakes in me. The world would be a better place if everyone read this book." (Richard Dawkins, author of Science in the Soul and Outgrowing God)

In our current political climate, it seems impossible to have a reasonable conversation with anyone who has a different opinion. Whether you're online, in a classroom, an office, a town hall - or just hoping to get through a family dinner with a stubborn relative - dialogue shuts down when perspectives clash. Heated debates often lead to insults and shaming, blocking any possibility of productive discourse. Everyone seems to be on a hair trigger.

In How to Have Impossible Conversations, Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay guide you through the straightforward, practical, conversational techniques necessary for every successful conversation - whether the issue is climate change, religious faith, gender identity, race, poverty, immigration, or gun control. Boghossian and Lindsay teach the subtle art of instilling doubts and opening minds. They cover everything from learning the fundamentals for good conversations to achieving expert-level techniques to deal with hardliners and extremists. This book is the manual everyone needs to foster a climate of civility, connection, and empathy.

A self-help guide as much as a book about conversations a new book from half the team behind the Sokal Squared AffairThis book is really excellent — readable, interesting, immediately applicable, energizing, empowering, and hopeful. It is so good that after reading it, I, a sane/non-SJW liberal on a very leftist campus, am 90% less anxious about conversations that may occur this semester. I have used it to good effect once already in a conversation about why I read very conservative news sources in addition to more mainstream ones. My interlocutor was accusing me of ill motives and hidden agendas. By staying calm and being willing to stop my practice if they had a good argument, the conversation went well and a classmate (who had previously been horrified by seeing the Daily Caller on my screen) was promoted to “potential friend.”The book is great. You should buy it, read it, and apply it.

The Perfect Companion for Outdoor Recreation and Trip Planning

Rely on DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer paper maps for the utmost in trip planning and backcountry access. It's available in paperback (11-inches x 15.5-inches) for all 50 states.

Still better than computer maps If you like exploring back roads, these books are an absolute must. I've bought one for every state I've lived in. Google maps and GPS are great resources and I use them both, but I keep coming back to this when I need to survey large areas quickly and pick routes. This is a great tool for planning my motorcycle trips. No computer can compete with the data throughput of flipping through a book of maps.If I had one suggestion, it would be to identify which roads are dirt (or gravel) and which roads are paved.A must-buy for a back roads photographer / traveler. I use my Michigan Recreational Atlas constantly - as a record of places I photograph and for potential photo ops.As I'm leaving for PA next month to photograph the Elk herds, it seemed like a good idea to get the PA version. However, because it's high on topography, it's quite difficult to read road names and to see access info. It still is a major improvement over State fold-up maps. Not as good as a Recreational Atlas version, but still worth the $$. Delorme remains my Atlas of choice.Be forewarned, though - it may not be a fast delivery (allow plenty of time for trip starts.) The anticipated date was Sept 26 to October 5th (my trip starts on Oct 7th, so that made me nervous.) However, it was a happy day when Amazon sent me an email saying they were able to get it earlier than expected and were shipping immediately. It came on Saturday, Sept 23rd, giving me plenty of time to study the maps and mark them for day-tripping.Worthless for back roads. Can I give it zero stars? This PA map is completely worthless. It’s advertised as “Detailed maps for back roads” yet has next to no back roads showed on the map. I live on a back road that has been in place for over 30 years, and has two huge ponds. Neither the road nor the ponds were even remotely shown on the map. I check 4 different people I know that live on various back roads around PA, and not one of the roads were shown on this sad excuse for a map. I have seen maps from the late 1980’s with more up-to-date info then this. I have not been this disappointed in a product in a very long time. If you need a map that only shows you the main roads this map will work fine, however if you would like to use it for its advertised purpose of navigating back roads, run far away before you get lost somewhere.
