but it can become tedious when the characters "furiously take notes The Phoenix Project is a business book masquerading as a work of fiction. As soon as I started evaluating The Phoenix Project in the context of a business book, rather than fiction, I started enjoying it a lot more, gaining much more insight into the concepts presented, rather than focusing on the unsophisticated prose and highly contrived scenarios. The "plot" serves as a vehicle for the authors to explore and pontificate on the business ideologies presented throughout. The main character, Bill, is mentored through each of these concepts, implementing them for the benefit of the reader to see the dramatic impact each can have on a business. For the most part, this is well executed, but it can become tedious when the characters "furiously take notes, so that they can google the terms later." Yes, the authors really write this, banging the reader of the head with, "Hey Dummy, are you paying attention? This is important."One of the best parts of the book was actually after the fictional plot ended, and the authors took the extra time to collect the concepts presented and revist them in a brief summary at the end. I hoped for this, as going back through The Phoenix Project to find each in turn, and learn more would have been difficult. If I could suggest to the authors an improvement, it would be to break the 4th wall during the fictional telling of the plot, and provide footnotes or references to the reader referencing where in the summary section they can read a bit more about a given concept. Nothing would be lost by this approach, as the reader quicky realizes the point and purpose of the plot anyways.Overall, The Phoenix Project provides an easy way for non-business people to get their feet wet with process improvements, without making the explanations and concepts too burdensome. I find myself quoting passages with co-workers who've also read the book, realizing that all too many of the scenarios presented are real life problems we face everyday (though perhaps less severely than in the Phoenix Project.) As such, I know I've already taken something away from the book, even if I won't have a chance to master every improvement, or even experiment with them all. It provides a new way of thinking about software development, and all the organizations it impacts. Four stars.

Some nice designs, but cheap paper After buying a book which used quality paper, the low quality of paper used by this maker's books simply couldn't be ignored. It changes the tone of the color, amount of bleeding, end result is usually...blech...compared to others, etc.Yet, I still like this series & have used my small allowance to buy some. But I've become a quality snob. LOLSo I scan these pages (after I use a blade to cut them out - none of these books are perforated) & print them out on quality art paper I bought seperately.PITA, but I had already bought the book, so... The results are 100% better than using the original pages.I will be paying more attention to the descriptions, reviews, & questions on any future books I purchase. It may be "fun" to color pages with curse words in the phrase, but if the paper is just a level above newspaper, it's a waste of ink & time.Swear words! Obviously there are swear words. I like the fact the back of the pictures are black, makes for a lot less bleed through. I always put a piece of paper or card stock paper between anyway. I love the little details you can color. I use a combination of gel pens, markers, color pencils, and water color pens. This is my favorite adult coloring book so far! I may not buy the same one again but i would buy another.Disappointing, wish I'd checked the 1 Star Reviews before ordering This one went straight into the trash. I've had several adult sweary type coloring books in the past, but this one literally went right into the trash can after I received it and flipped through. Poor printing on several pages and a lot of the words honestly weren't funny/felt like a stretch to be crass just for the sake of it. Definitely check photos before putting this one in your cart to make sure it's actually what you want to gift or keep.

And that's just when things are going well. Ms. Elden lets us see some of that, those moments when hope is kept alive and a student does or says something that reminds you why like the proverbial frog...you never give up. I saw myself in two of the characters, and all the others were at one time or another, colleagues whom I admired, found annoying, respected, enjoyed intellectually and socially and all the rest. Teachers are as varied and independent as the students they teach, and students learn best in an environment where the teacher loves their subject matter, empathizes with their students and shows them a path to knowledge. That path takes many twists and turns and good teachers know how to mold whatever they do best to "fit" the current craze. Roxanna addresses it all with humor and pathos. She is less kindly disposed to two-year wonders who volunteer to teach in inner-city schools and corporate takeovers of school systems across the country. She addresses the stress of evaluations but more importantly it is the dynamic between legislators (mostly lawyers whom I think really hated their teachers before law school), the school district, the taxpayers who think they know best how to corral 25 kids long enough for them to listen to what you are saying and do what you ask of them--to "trust the process" amidst the hard work that learning requires, the Superintendents who may have some truly absurd notions about just how much paperwork a teacher can handle before they implode, and those parents who do not EVER believe their child lies, cheats, is on drugs, plagiarized or poked someone with a pencil or worse. And the central "actor" in this book is its villain, a company that is attempting to produce cookie-cutter workers for the job market rather than people who are able to think critically, rise above roadblocks in their lives and simply become healthy and decent adults. And she reminds us to be thankful for the colleagues you spend day after day with...good, bad or indifferent...who have family issues to resolve, cultural and social differences to adjust to, a work ethic that never stops even though they are decidedly underpaid, and yet deal with all the other events that plague their lives while preparing lessons and grading papers ad infinitum. They are all here in this book, frail human beings who care only to provide others' children with an appreciation for all knowledge and to guide them in finding a niche where they can thrive. It is in its validation of all I learned from a 25-year teaching career that I loved this book.I really enjoyed this book!! Ever wondered what it’s like to be a classroom teacher? This is definitely the funniest book dealing with teaching I've read yet. I was a teacher for 6 years and I can totally relate to everything in here! The bureaucratic nonsense, the testing overkill, the student behavior problems that somehow become a reflection of the teacher who sees them for an hour and a half every couple of days...It's so relatable, but also hilarious. The humor is really snarky and sarcastic. Teaching is the backdrop, and part of the plot, but there are also all these interwoven subplots--relationships starting and faltering and ending, rebellious kids, difficult sibling relationships--that keep it really lively and entertaining. I finished reading this in a couple of days. I would highly recommend it to any teacher, especially middle school or high school teachers, but I think it would still be funny and entertaining to non-teachers, especially parents of teenagers.

Treasure Hunters by James Patterson Not aware this was the first in a series of 3 of young adults books. However, read through all three of the books and am pretty sure that kids would like them. They had plot, action and were at a reading level that I think young people (8 to 12 maybe) could easily handle. I read the books too and I think James Patterson has done a fantastic job with this series. Of course, we thought some of it was totally unbelievable BUT that is why we loved it! Don't want to spoil it with details. Eagerly anticipating a third book to see if the biggest treasure will be located! With older children that refuse to read, it is refreshing to watch my little guy spend tons of money downloading books to his Kindle every few days! I can say that any James Patterson series for kids is well worth the investment.Picky Reader Finds a Favorite! My 10 year-old son received this book as a gift. I was amazed at how quickly he read it, at how much of the story he demanded to share with me, and how excited he was to learn there were more books in the series. He has received so much enjoyment from reading this series of books. Fellow homeschoolers, pirates, guns, travel, suspense, drama, action and adventure. What more could a young boy ask for?!Finding a similar series that my son will enjoy is no small task.

Disappointing I'm encouraged to see that I'm not the only one who thought this book wasn't so hot. After reading all the pages of raving blurbs, I thought I'd really be in for a treat. But I couldn't believe in it (and this is from another aging--okay, old--gay man). I spent so much energy slogging through the writer's attempts to be clever in every single sentence that I couldn't get involved with the character or story. I will admit that I laughed out loud a few times, and that's a lot more than I get out of the majority of books I read, but overall it was tedious, difficult reading. I was left wondering if "winner of the Pulitzer prize" was just part of the title--a bit of irony based on Less's older lover's having won the prize.Couldn't care less about "Less". What was the Pulitzer group thinking?!? Based on the Pulitzer designation and based on some of the endorsements from favorite writers (Ann Patchett), my book club chose "Less". All six of us (college educated women ages 35 to 71) disliked it. The criticisms were that the main character was uninteresting, unsympathetic and unrelatable; that the paltry humor was only mildly amusing (not "hysterical" as one endorsement said), the ending was predictable and anticlimactic; and that we finished reading it out of duty to the club, not because the book was compelling. In other words, we couldn't care less about "Less". The only redeeming aspect was the interesting way the author would weave past and present together in the narrative. I cannot recommend this book and the Pulitzer people need to reexamine their standards.Less is More Arthur Less is hilariously well-named. In the opening salvo, he is waiting to be escorted to a literary event, sitting in a hotel lobby, while a woman he is meant to meet is circling the room looking for a woman, mistakenly thinking the author of the book she's read cannot be a man. On the eve of Arthur's fiftieth birthday, his partner of almost ten years has announced his upcoming nuptials, and in order to avoid this nightmare, Arthur has cobbled together a trip around the world accepting an odd congregation of invitations to host, attend, and teach various literary events. With each stop, he goes into his past, revealing more and more about himself and his history. Each experience generates memory, both poignant and absurd. Greer has a fine sense of character and irony, and this surpasses other books I've read by him.

50 classic Bible stories retold in language easily accessible to children. This book is a paraphrase, not a translation. While it is appropriate for children, it does not shy away from traditional concepts. Creation, the Fall, Exodus, Jesus birth, ministry, death and resurrection are all included in ways that will make each child feel God’s love and God’s care for everyone and all creation. For example, though the Beatitudes are titled "Jesus Teaches the Secret of Happiness," each is given as "Blessed are." "Blessed are you who feed the poor, for you are the hands of God," for example. Each story has a simple one sentence prayer. For the Beatitudes, "Dear God, thank you for showing us the way to true happiness." Unlike many children’s Bibles, this one is true to the text–there won’t be things to unlearn when making the transition to a regular Bible. Nor, will one discover that many details didn’t really exist in scripture. As a paraphrase, stories are often presented in a fresh way while remaining true to the original intent. Anyone who reads this story Bible will know God loves them and how God wants people to live. The beautiful illustrations by twenty artists from around the world show the diversity of God’s people and how Jesus is seen in different contexts. I’ve reviewed children’s bibles for 35 years and this is the best I’ve seen. This book is a delight and a true gift for anyone who wants to share God’s love with a child.
Children of God Storybook Bible is a brand new children’s Bible-not even released yet retold by Desmond Tutu! (Yet by the end of this review, maybe you’ll be convinced to put it on your wishlist!) From the moment I opened this children’s Bible, I knew I liked it! The table of contents displays the clear titles (no guessing which story you want), Bible reference, and page number. The fifty-six stories are included in this children’s Bible all point to the gift of God’s love for children everywhere. The stories themselves are well-written and include enough details to help a child learn the actual Bible story. (For example, in "The Trial and Death of Jesus" the Garden of Gethsemane is named as where Jesus was praying, and it explains that Pontius Pilate was the Roman ruler.) The recommended ages for this Bible are 4-7, but some younger children may enjoy this. Each story (and illustration) is over a two page spread. There is a main title and then a subtitle explaining how it relates to God. (For "Jonah and the Big Fish" the subtitle is "God loves everyone, even our enemies" with the reference Jonah 1-4.) Each ends with a short prayer. Tutu titled the story of the Beatitudes "Jesus Teaches the Secret to Happiness," which I think is incorrect. I don’t think the goal here is for us to be happy, but to glorify God. The illustrations are amazing, and this Bible has twenty illustrators! They were invited by Archbishop Tutu to portray the stories with the style and richness of their own cultures. Though that means Jesus may look different from one page to another. Also, because the illustrators reflected their own cultures, Jesus is sometimes dark skinned and other times pale. I do not believe Jesus was a white man, nor do I believe that he was black, so some of the illustrations are misleading to me. All in all, I do recommend this Bible!

I bought this book for my Godson after having seen it in person. The vivid detail of the pictures, paired with the beautiful phrIDg by Archbishop Tutu makes for the perfect children’s bible. I highly recommend it as a standard bible for children under six years old. Jesus is depicted in many different skin tones, and with almost every ethnicity surrounding him. This book teach diversity without an agenda, and shares the love of Christ in colors almost as vibrant as the message.
