Title: You Can Do Anything Pdf The Surprising Power of a "Useless" Liberal Arts Education
Author: George Anders
Published Date: 2019-01-08
Page: 352

Praise for You Can Do Anything"Utterly fascinating and massively important. George Anders peers into his signature crystal ball, and paints a portrait of the future of work that's as compelling as it is provocative."―Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals"Anders' latest book is a must-read for liberal arts students and grads. Packed with relatable stories and role models, it not only inspires you with stories about what liberal arts grads have done with their educations, but also gives you a clear map to find your own path in the world."―Laszlo Bock, author of Work Rules!, former SVP of People Operations at Google, and CEO of Humu, Inc."Anders shows us precisely why majors like Philosophy, History, and Anthropology teach the skills employers can't outsource to robots and software... students should feel not only reassurance or permission but an actual obligation to go there, for their own sake, and for the sake of us all.'"―Julia Lythcott-Haims, author of How to Raise an Adult and former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford University"I could have used this book several times in my life. When I graduated from Northwestern with a degree in linguistics... and even today, when I'm the parent of high school junior intent on studying poetry and modern dance in college. You Can Do Anything will inspire a new generation to greater heights, while delivering a much-needed wake-up call to campus leaders and employers."―Daniel H. Pink, New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Drive and A Whole New Mind"The career stories of liberal arts graduates provide the best argument for the value of their education. George Anders, in his thoughtful new book You Can Do Anything, tells these stories in a compelling manner, weaving the threads of their education into the tapestry of their lives, demonstrating over and over why employers should seek out these unique thinkers. An interesting read and valuable for any liberal arts graduate or recruiter!"―Dr. Katharine Brooks, author of You Majored in What? and Executive Director of the Vanderbilt University Career Center"As a parent about to send her second child off to college--this one has a theater major--George Anders' book was not just a good show topic, but a balm to my soul."―Krys Boyd, host of KERA's "Think""George Anders has provided a compelling and decisive answer to the recurring question, 'What is the value proposition of a liberal arts education?' Students should have this book in their backpack or on their iPads. So should their parents, teachers, and our policy-makers."―Frederick M. Lawrence, CEO of Phi Beta Kappa Society"At the present moment... it is only liberal arts majors who have to wonder whether all of the articles and books promoting the marketability of their chosen discipline should make them more or less uneasy about the future. Two additions to this growing field have appeared just in time to try to sooth the post-graduation panic.. [including] You Can Do Anything.... [Anders] suppl[ies] useful talking points in support of the financial viability of studying the liberal arts."―Timothy Aubry, New York Times Book Review"Useful guidance for newly minted job hunters"―Kirkus"Give this to anyone who is questioning the value of a classical education in today's fast-paced world."―Booklist George Anders is a contributing writer at Forbes, exploring issues related to careers, education and innovation. He is the author of five books, including Merchants of Debt, Health Against Wealth, the New York Times bestseller Perfect Enough, and The Rare Find. Earlier in his career, George served as a staff writer for The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company magazine and Bloomberg View. In 1997, he shared in a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. He and his wife live in northern California. Their two sons are starting their own college adventures.

In a tech-dominated world, the most needed degrees are the most surprising: the liberal arts

Did you take the right classes in college? Will your major help you get the right job offers? For more than a decade, the national spotlight has focused on science and engineering as the only reliable choice for finding a successful post-grad career. Our destinies have been reduced to a caricature: learn to write computer code or end up behind a counter, pouring coffee. Quietly, though, a different path to success has been taking shape. In YOU CAN DO ANYTHING, George Anders explains the remarkable power of a liberal arts education - and the ways it can open the door to thousands of cutting-edge jobs every week.

The key insight: curiosity, creativity, and empathy aren't unruly traits that must be reined in. You can be yourself, as an English major, and thrive in sales. You can segue from anthropology into the booming new field of user research; from classics into management consulting, and from philosophy into high-stakes investing. At any stage of your career, you can bring a humanist's grace to our rapidly evolving high-tech future. And if you know how to attack the job market, your opportunities will be vast.

In this book, you will learn why resume-writing is fading in importance and why "telling your story" is taking its place. You will learn how to create jobs that don't exist yet, and to translate your campus achievements into a new style of expression that will make employers' eyes light up. You will discover why people who start in eccentric first jobs - and then make their own luck - so often race ahead of peers whose post-college hunt focuses only on security and starting pay. You will be ready for anything.

Just like the title of his newest book Just like the title of his newest book, George Anders can write anything -- and do it in a way to engage readers and make us think. This book validated my own views; there's so much pressure out there that our children freak out when they don't know what to do with the rest of their lives by middle school. Thank you, George, for giving us all permission to relax and be okay when our children go off to college without a plan. They don't come out of the womb with instructions. They need to follow their own paths, and they can do amazing things with those history and sociology degrees. I am thinking about getting copies of this book for graduation gifts.Mom and Dad, I will be okay! I have the perspective of many decades past the time I declared my college major. At the time, I switched my focus from being an indifferent pre-med to an enthralled psych major. My parents despaired. They were both in the medical field. When I graduated, I sent out scads of resumés, cover letters, and inquiries. Nothing came of them, so I went back home and took whatever jobs would help me pay for rent and expenses. No job is beneath me. I do my best no matter what the task. My career has not been a straight line, has not shown steady growth in salary, and even has a few gaps for child raising. In spite of this, I have negotiated positions in Human Resources, Knowledge Management consulting, sales, musical performance, and administrative duties. I have also been a retail clerk, temp worker, teacher, and volunteer. If I had read George Anders’ book, I might have been able to reassure my folks that I wouldn’t end up destitute or living in their home for the rest of my days. I hope this book gives hope to those students who select their fields of study because of passion, ability, and a calling they cannot ignore. Thank you, George, for providing this guidebook for those who are courageous enough to break trail.Get great career advice whether you are in the liberal arts, sciences, or engineering This is a fascinating book that shatters the many misconceptions and unfortunate stereotypes associated with a liberal arts degree--namely that graduating with such a degree is nice but closely tied to unemployment. Instead, the author provides a large number of "case studies" that describe how talented individuals with liberal arts degrees not only obtain jobs, they develop wonderful careers in highly competitive domains such as Silicon Valley start-ups. Anders does not "sugar coat" his description of what it takes to get to that "dream job." He appropriately describes both the setbacks and victories these liberal arts grads lived through to develop satisfying careers. The stories are fun to read as well as being instructive and inspiring. I think that many readers, beyond those contemplating or finishing a liberal arts degree, will enjoy this book. In fact, those in science and engineering would absorb a lot of great career advice that would apply to their own efforts to advance a career. In addition, teachers, guidance counselors, and professors (especially in the liberal arts!) would be well served to read this book to broaden their own thinking as to what is possible with a so-called, "useless" liberal arts education.

Title: Sufficiently Advanced Magic Pdf Arcane Ascension, Book 1

Five years ago Corin Cadence's brother entered the Serpent Spire - a colossal tower with ever-shifting rooms, traps, and monsters. Those who survive the spire's trials return home with an attunement: a mark granting the bearer magical powers. According to legend, those few who reach the top of the tower will be granted a boon by the spire's goddess.

He never returned.

Now it's Corin's turn. He's headed to the top floor, on a mission to meet the goddess.

If he can survive the trials, Corin will earn an attunement, but that won't be sufficient to survive the dangers on the upper levels. For that he's going to need training, allies, and a lot of ingenuity.

The journey won't be easy, but Corin won't stop until he gets his brother back.

Too Much of Everything on to Feel Connected to Anything A test opens this complicated and lengthy young adult fantasy. Most of the test is fighting various monsters and solving puzzles in a mysterious tower. The similarity to role playing games is intentional. There are two main goals to going into the tower: survival and gaining an attunement. Survival is not guaranteed. An attunement is the combination of an affinity and an ability in connection with a particular sort of magic. Corin Cadence is our young male hero. His trip into the tower also has the goal of finding out what happened to his older brother who entered the tower and never returned. Right from the beginning, Corin’s trip in the tower goes astray as unexpected and unusual events begin to happen. All of this is explained at length in the story and in long appendix materials at the end of the book. The system of magic is complex and that complexity detracts from its attractiveness and the story. Most of the book is set in the boarding school that Corin and other young people with attunements enter after exiting the tower. The cast of characters is lengthy as well with professors, students, family members, and mysterious entities. The plot involves some coming of age themes, magical training, treachery, loyalty, war, and political intrigue. For me, it all got a bit muddled and the excessive complications interfered with my connection to the story and the characters. The author was committed to creating the fantasy world, a religious tangle of multiple gods with a ruling Goddess, fantasy weapons, and his system of magic in great detail. I felt like I was slogging through the book at times. There is a great deal of fighting and violence in the book, but it is mostly is a fantasy type of fighting and lacks gruesome details. The swearing is made up words. There are hints of some mild and innocent romance/flirtation that includes the possibility of a same sex relationship. The book is the first in a series and this volume ends with many unresolved issues. There are other young adult fantasy series that I have found to more engaging, including, for example, the Rebel of the Sands trilogy by Alwyn Hamilton, The Queen’s Thief Series by Megan Whalen Turner, The Chronicles of Kazam series by Jasper Fforde, the Shifting Tides series by James Maxwell, not to mention the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula LeGuin or Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

Title: Atomic Habits Pdf Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results

The instant New York Times best-seller.

Tiny changes, remarkable results

No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving - every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results.

If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights.

Clear is known for his ability to distill complex topics into simple behaviors that can be easily applied to daily life and work. Here, he draws on the most proven ideas from biology, psychology, and neuroscience to create an easy-to-understand guide for making good habits inevitable and bad habits impossible. Along the way, listeners will be inspired and entertained with true stories from Olympic gold medalists, award-winning artists, business leaders, life-saving physicians, and star comedians who have used the science of small habits to master their craft and vault to the top of their field.

Learn how to:

  • Make time for new habits (even when life gets crazy)
  • Overcome a lack of motivation and willpower
  • Design your environment to make success easier
  • Get back on track when you fall off course
  • And much more

Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success and give you the tools and strategies you need to transform your habits - whether you are a team looking to win a championship, an organization hoping to redefine an industry, or simply an individual who wishes to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or achieve any other goal.

Adrenaline Junkie HYPES Habits. (What?! Read on, friend...) Disclaimer: I scored the jackpot and got my grubby paws on this early.I didn't see myself getting especially excited about this book. I was like, "OK James. I like you. You seem like a nice guy. Your work is very link-able and that's made my life simpler on many an occasion. I TOTALLY FEEL SPECIAL because you have involved me (*marginally) in your ~process~. But habits? *yawn* What-evvvvver. Btw, I already know LIKE EV-UH-RYTHING because I read Charles Duhigg's book and was early on the Fogg method game. Ergo: I am The Expert. Bow down b*tches." <--Ok just kidding on that last line. But BA-sicallyy.My inner world is................. a special place.I didn't think I was going to get hype about a book about habits, yet here we are. I am hype about a book.... about habits. Why??? Why has this drama-loving, big picture adoring, enthusiastic creature shifted keys to start singing song of habits? Because it's unflattering. And that's EXACTLY why we need to self-examine.Here's the thing:Every person reading this review (also, hi!) has bad habits.Every person reading this review has good ones. And - I would wager - every person reading this review has unfinished business. There's some dream, change, or new echelon of self-actualization you have yet to inhabit. The problem isn't your ambitions -- it's your habits. James wrote something powerful I will directly quote when writing with book in hand. The message is this: success isn't determined by the scale of your dreams. Winners and losers have the same dreams. But the winners have better habits. There are a number of ~juicy nuggets~ that will come out of the woodwork to slap your b*tch-ass into line. I doubled back on more than one occasion. Check out his Instagram -- he's been sharing a number of nice one liners. But if you're like......... 80% of the way there, you might as well. This book is:- Actionable- Pragmatic- Grounded <-- woah!- Science-y- Sweet- Readable <-- nice.My advice:1. If you're this deep in the reviews section, buy the book.2. Seriously, buy the book.3. While you wait for it to arrive, mentally accept that James Clear will not personally pry the donut from your grip and supervise your situps.4. Open your Amazon package.5. Read the book.6. Learn things.7. Implement said things.8. Rinse repeat.9. *Flourish*Thanks for reading along. It's been an honor! *hat tip, bows*TOO MUCH MARKETING, TOO MUCH HYPE, TOO MUCH GIMMICKS I have been reading James's blog for a while. So when this book came out, I purchased it immediately on the release day with high anticipation, hoping to learn new things. I have read quite alot of mini habit, tiny habit, micro habit, small habit, atomic habit etc. kind of books. Unfortunately this book was quite dissappointing to me. Says nothing new. Nothing special. Just rehashed from all the other books on the market. Also, very same day book was marketed, quite a few 5 star reviews were written right away on Amazon. When did they buy.... read... and write the book review? I guess, this is marketing trick and it shook my trust in the high reviews.I purchased the book with the hope of finding an informative section for breaking the bad habits. But, unfortunately part of the material about this subject was not in the book. As he informed us readers, he kept the real info about breaking the bad habits as "bonus material" for people who ordered THREE OR MORE COPIES.İn my opinion, this sales gimmick and his approach is not ethical. He should have given this "bonus" to ALL buyers. His free material on his website was more satisfying and informative than this highly publicised heavily marketed book. Also in the book, for any "bonus material" he offers, in order to receive them, he asks for my e-mail over and over again. Why? I already bought the book. Why do you request for my mail again and again? Whole thing is too commercial and high dosage of vanity for my taste. If you are new to the "small habits" idea, this book could be valuable to you just like any other tiny habit books on the market. No more no less. But, I feel I wasted my money for this book.Huge toolkit of actionable, practical, organized strategies to build positive habits I've read a lot of books on changing behavior and building habits and James Clear's Atomic Habits is my new favorite. This book is different from others in the way it covers an enormous amount of ground in the larger area of self-improvement while seamlessly tying all these ideas back into the central theme of habits. One of the core concepts in Atomic Habits is to focus on the small improvement. The impact a 1% improvement per day can make may appear negligible at first, but Clear makes a compelling argument that in the case of habits, thinking small produces the biggest results over time. "Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement," explains Clear.Over the months and years, the accumulated effect of small habitual daily behaviors is staggering. Early in the book we are also warned that this compounding works both ways, so we'd better make sure we're making it work in the positive direction, not for the negative. This is a concept I was introduced to years ago under a different name - Kaizen - the Japanese term for continuous incremental improvement. What's different and new in this book is how the concept is applied specifically to building habits.I found the information introduced in chapter two about behavior change at the identity level to be spot-on. You're also given a simple two-step process for changing your identity and this one idea alone is incredibly powerful. In chapter three, we are introduced to the habit loop - cue, craving, response, reward - and we learn how to build good habits in 4 simple steps and break bad habits in 4 simple steps. One of those steps to habit formation, which goes hand in hand with the 1% concept, is how to make it not only small, but easy. In the chapters that follow, this is exactly what you find out.Other ideas of great value that stood out included, habit stacking (the best way to form a new habit), habit tracking, habit shaping and how to design your environment - physical and social - for habit building success. You learn the truth about self-control, how to stop procrastinating and how to use implementation intentions, temptation bundling and motivational rituals. The book is simply packed with actionable ideas, tactics and strategies.Virtually every idea in the book is useful and resonated with me. While I may not agree that we should "forget about goals," I agree with one of Clear's core principles in the book - that we must develop systems for change. If we only focus on goals and don't develop systems and a focus on the process, we risk falling into a number of goal-related traps which ultimately lead to stagnation. With the right systems, we're rewarded with continuous improvement on a lifelong journey of success.Another difference between Atomic Habits and other books in this genre is that while it's based on science it doesn't bog you down with unnecessary details of the research. Clear's book is intensely practical, giving you a huge toolkit of organized and named strategies you can apply immediately to create and strengthen positive habits and stop the negative ones. The book is conversational, and includes many interesting stories, making it easy to read - and hard to put down (I read it cover to cover in one day). It's possible this might become your most highlighted personal improvement book because every page is so chocked full of memorable and quotable gems of advice.
