Review

“The Children of God Storybook Bible is a wonderful way to introduce my young grandchildren to our Christian faith.” — President Jimmy Carter, , President|Magnificently illustrated and beautifully written Scriptural wisdom from one of the church’s greatest heroes. This book is the one children’s book that every Christian family should own. This book will serve as the main devotional book for my children in the upcoming year. In Children of God, Bishop Tutu presents Biblical truths reflecting a much-needed global perspective. –Soong-Chan Rah Milton B. Engebretson Associate Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism North Park Theological Seminary — Dr. Soong-Chan Rah, , Professor|“Desmond Tutu speaks to children and their elders in an inspiring and beautiful retelling of many of the central stories of the Bible. The artwork is a strong partner to the stories, and supports the challenge of the prayer that closes each one.” — Katharine Jefferts Schori, , Presiding Bishop and Primate

50 classic Bible stories retold in language easily accessible to children. This book is a paraphrase, not a translation. While it is appropriate for children, it does not shy away from traditional concepts. Creation, the Fall, Exodus, Jesus birth, ministry, death and resurrection are all included in ways that will make each child feel God’s love and God’s care for everyone and all creation. For example, though the Beatitudes are titled "Jesus Teaches the Secret of Happiness," each is given as "Blessed are." "Blessed are you who feed the poor, for you are the hands of God," for example. Each story has a simple one sentence prayer. For the Beatitudes, "Dear God, thank you for showing us the way to true happiness." Unlike many children’s Bibles, this one is true to the text–there won’t be things to unlearn when making the transition to a regular Bible. Nor, will one discover that many details didn’t really exist in scripture. As a paraphrase, stories are often presented in a fresh way while remaining true to the original intent. Anyone who reads this story Bible will know God loves them and how God wants people to live. The beautiful illustrations by twenty artists from around the world show the diversity of God’s people and how Jesus is seen in different contexts. I’ve reviewed children’s bibles for 35 years and this is the best I’ve seen. This book is a delight and a true gift for anyone who wants to share God’s love with a child.

Children of God Storybook Bible is a brand new children’s Bible-not even released yet retold by Desmond Tutu! (Yet by the end of this review, maybe you’ll be convinced to put it on your wishlist!) From the moment I opened this children’s Bible, I knew I liked it! The table of contents displays the clear titles (no guessing which story you want), Bible reference, and page number. The fifty-six stories are included in this children’s Bible all point to the gift of God’s love for children everywhere. The stories themselves are well-written and include enough details to help a child learn the actual Bible story. (For example, in "The Trial and Death of Jesus" the Garden of Gethsemane is named as where Jesus was praying, and it explains that Pontius Pilate was the Roman ruler.) The recommended ages for this Bible are 4-7, but some younger children may enjoy this. Each story (and illustration) is over a two page spread. There is a main title and then a subtitle explaining how it relates to God. (For "Jonah and the Big Fish" the subtitle is "God loves everyone, even our enemies" with the reference Jonah 1-4.) Each ends with a short prayer. Tutu titled the story of the Beatitudes "Jesus Teaches the Secret to Happiness," which I think is incorrect. I don’t think the goal here is for us to be happy, but to glorify God. The illustrations are amazing, and this Bible has twenty illustrators! They were invited by Archbishop Tutu to portray the stories with the style and richness of their own cultures. Though that means Jesus may look different from one page to another. Also, because the illustrators reflected their own cultures, Jesus is sometimes dark skinned and other times pale. I do not believe Jesus was a white man, nor do I believe that he was black, so some of the illustrations are misleading to me. All in all, I do recommend this Bible!

This Bible was provided to me from Zonderkidz for review purposes.

I bought this book for my Godson after having seen it in person. The vivid detail of the pictures, paired with the beautiful phrIDg by Archbishop Tutu makes for the perfect children’s bible. I highly recommend it as a standard bible for children under six years old. Jesus is depicted in many different skin tones, and with almost every ethnicity surrounding him. This book teach diversity without an agenda, and shares the love of Christ in colors almost as vibrant as the message.

“The leader within the Catholic world in the task of recovering our Christian contemplative heritage.”—Ewert H. Cousins, general editor, World Spirituality: An Encyclopedic History of the Religious Quest (Ewert H. Cousins)

“My mother is a self-proclaimed ‘soul shopper’ from way back. We started going to St Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass when I was 7 years old. Several years later, Keating became a St. Benedict’s monk. He developed centering prayer, which is a lot like meditation and what this book is about. He says that meditation (or centering prayer) is a way of reducing the obstacles to the development of grace. I can sit for only five to ten minutes. It’s very hard for me. Still, when I get in trouble, it shifts my perspective. As they say, we don’t pray to change our circumstances; we pray to change ourselves.”-Felicity Huffman’s Bookshelf in “Oprah’s Books”

I have a checkered spiritual past. Like many people of my generation, I have always felt that modern life was going in the wrong direction, and that the traditional answers we were getting from the government and institutionalized religion just weren’t quenching the spiritual drought in the contemporary world. So I went east, to Buddhism, the Sufis, Hinduism, looking for something that might help me fill the void I felt. Then I stumbled upon the Centering Prayer movement. Little did I know that the Christian tradition that I grew up in, would hold the secret to what I was looking for.
Centering Prayer is based squarely in the Christian tradition. It is based on forms of prayer that have roots in the earliest Christian monesteries of the 4th century. There are even tantalizing glimpses of it in the writings of St. Paul and even the Gospels, though not spelled out in so many words (which is probably what gives literalists conniptions.) It existed in the Benedictine monasteries of medieval Europe, in the Cloud of Unknowing, the 14th century manual of prayer, and in the writings of St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila. It is not, I repeat, NOT a "new age" spirituality, unless one thinks that all of Christian Spirituality is new age (and the case could be made that it is.) Centering Prayer is a simple method of prayer that is designed to help us consent to the presence and action of God in our lives. Through quite simple guildelines and a few adjustments of attitudes, Centering Prayer helps us to let go of our own ego and expectations and just "wait upon the Lord". For me, it has been key to reawakening my Christian faith.
Having been a practicing Buddhist for many years, I can say that readers who equate Centering Prayer with Buddhist practice are mistaken.

First off, fair warning to parents and people who are sensitive to partial nudity – there is some in this volume, but it’s not for the context of people getting it on. Have you ever heard of the term "food porn" before (really awesome pictures of food where you just want to stop what you’re doing and eat something?) This book has the follow up to food porn known as "foodgasm"…the sometimes questionable looking images are based on completely over the top eating reactions where a character may be reduced down to their skivvies. No human melons or sausages are flashed, but as a parent, I wanted to give full disclosure. That said, as the manga goes on into further chapters, the gratuitous fan service scenes do die down – again, keep in mind, panty flashes is not the focus of this manga.

That said, Shokugeki no Soma is total Shonen Manga (targeted to young boys) – it’s a story about Yukihira S’ma, whose dream is to become a full-time chef in his father’s restaurant and surpass his father’s culinary skills. When S’ma graduates middle school, his father, Yukihira J’ichir’ , gets a new job in America and abruptedly closes his restaurant. In the meantime, J’ichir’ sends S’ma to an elite culinary school where only 10% of the students manage to graduate. The first five chapters are included in this volume, along with the original one shot used to promote the series.

The art done by Shun Saeki is absolutely stunning. The illustrations are highly detailed, well laid out, and the food images totally rival anything you could see on Food Network. You will want to stop and eat something while reading this manga. The story by Yuto Tsukuda is equally gripping. It can be slightly predictable, but no less really entertaining to read.
